Altogether Lovely

His beauty stretches a spectrum

So vastly beyond the eye’s perception

Involving extremes so rarely embraced in entirety.

His loveliness spans heights and depths

Excessively above the minds comprehension

A distance so wideranging

Making rare the heart that adores Him

From His summits to His valleys.

He is white and He is ruddy.

He is altogether lovely.

As Lord and Ruler, He sits enthroned on high

With flaming brightness and glory shone

Yet just as true to His self-revealing

Lies the tiny, helpless baby so low, so vulnerable, so poor.

Shall we love the One enthroned

And not also cling desperately to the One in swaddling clothes?

As King, we behold Him standing

In blindingly bright whiteness.

Yet as the Lamb slain our breath is taken

By His marred face and dripping crimson blood.

Are both of these not hues of His glory so breathtaking?

Shall we embrace one shade of His person

And hold distant from our hearts another?

He is white and He is ruddy.

He is altogether lovely.

As the Lord of Hosts He marches

Arrayed in whitest robe and glittering sword

Yet splattered upon His garments is the scarlet blood of His foes.

The winepress He has tread alone.

Shall we worship Him as mighty

And then disown Him in His judgment?

Shall we say we love Him

But ask Him to restrain portions of His person?

He is white and He is ruddy.

He is altogether lovely.

How rare is the heart that believes in truth He is altogether lovely

How rare the one to embrace in all love

The wideranging of His being

Yet this rare love He seeks, for He shall never change.

He is all that He is without compromise

And He is beauty without blemish.

Blessed is the heart that holds Him so precious

As to say without reservation,

He is white and He is ruddy.

He is altogether lovely.
